Seven Teams Post Perfect Multi-Year Academic Progress Rates
May 2, 2023 | Field Hockey, General, Women's Basketball, Academics
The University of North Carolina field hockey and women's soccer teams, which won the NCAA championship and played in the national title game, respectively, last fall, are two of seven Tar Heel programs to record perfect multi-year 1000s in the NCAA's Academic Progress Rates.
Â
The NCAA uses Academic Progress Rates to track the academic performance of scholarship students who compete on varsity teams. The score measures eligibility and retention each semester by student athletes at every NCAA institution. The current data reflects the 2021-22 school year; the multi-year rates include rates over the past four years from 2018-19 to 2021-22.
Â
Each of Carolina's teams scored 950 or higher in the multi-year rates with 23 registering at least 980, 16 with at least 990 and the seven with perfect 1000s. Across the board, Carolina Athletics posted a multi-year average of 990, the fourth time in the last six years the Tar Heels' 28-sport average was 990 or higher.
Â
Carolina women's tennis, the 2023 ITA indoor national champions and the No. 1-ranked team in the nation, and men's golf, which has finished fifth in the country in the previous two NCAA Championships and is ranked No. 2 in the nation, scored 1000s in the multi-year rate.
Â
Women's fencing, women's swimming and diving, which finished 10th in the 2023 NCAA Championship, and volleyball also had perfect scores over the past four years.
Â
Football compiled its highest-ever multi-year rate at 982 with the last three single-year rates (984 in 2021-22, 1000 in 2020-21 and 997 in 2019-20) being its three highest in the 19-year history of the APR.
Â
Field hockey, which has won four NCAA championships in the past five seasons, earned its first-ever multi-year rate of 1000, softball compiled a program-best multi-year rate of 997, men's track and field set its multi-year record at 989 and baseball tied its best multi-year rate, a 989 for the second straight year.
Â
Women's basketball's multi-year rate of 986 is the program's best since 2015-16.
Â
Fifteen Tar Heel teams scored single-year marks of 1000 in 2021-22, including (with number of 1000 seasons) women's basketball (6), men's and women's cross country (11 and 13), men's and women's fencing (12 and 19), field hockey (11), men's golf (12), gymnastics (16), women's soccer (11), softball (9), women's swimming and diving (14), women's tennis (16), men's indoor and outdoor track and field (3) and volleyball (17).
Â
This is the 10th time in 19 years at least 10 women's programs scored 1000. Women's fencing once again scored 1000, reaching that perfect mark in all 19 years. Volleyball and women's golf have 17 1000 seasons, and gymnastics and women's tennis have hit 1000 all but three times.
Â
Men's fencing and men's golf scored 1000 for the 12th time each, which equals the most years with 1000 by any men's programs, with the golfers hitting that mark for a seventh consecutive year, the longest active streak among the men's programs.
