CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – For Dr. Spencer Nadolsky, investing into the North Carolina wrestling program has continued long after his athletic career came to a close on the mat in Carmichael Arena.
A passion in exercise science and nutrition that was sparked during his time as an athlete in Chapel Hill, Nadolsky '07 donated weight room equipment this past season for the program's practice facility.
In honor of his generous donations, the new workout facility for the wrestling program at North Carolina will be dedicated in Nadolsky's name.
"We are extremely grateful and honored that Spencer and all of our program's alumni continue to reinvest into Carolina Wrestling," head coach Coleman Scott said. "As a program, we continue to strive to perform at an elite level in every aspect of life, especially given the support we receive daily."
The Holland, Mich., native transferred to UNC prior to the 2004 season. Nadolsky was a key component of the program as the Tar Heels' heavyweight from 2004-06. During the 2005-06 campaign, Nadolsky won 42 matches during the season, the third-most single-season victories in program history. A two-time NCAA qualifier, Nadolsky competed for the Tar Heels at the 2006 NCAA Wrestling Championships in Oklahoma City, Okla., advancing to the Round of 12 before dropping a close overtime match and just missing out on the All-America podium.
For Nadolsky, his experiences as an athlete and into his professional career were driving factors into the decision to give back, as Nadolsky utilizes his exercise science degree earned at UNC to use exercise a form of medicine.
"The ability to give back in a form that's both functional and meaningful for the team is extremely important, especially in a form that's a passion of mine and is proven to improve your performance," Nadolsky said.
"It's rewarding to be able to pay it forward with everything UNC has given me, and it's exciting to see the equipment put to use by the student-athletes and how appreciative they have been," said Nadolsky.
Upon graduation, Nadolsky enrolled in medical school at the Edward Via College of Osteopathic Medicine, completing his degree in 2011. Today, Nadolsky is an obesity and lipid specialist physician and the medical director of Sequence, a comprehensive weight loss program which combines clinically proven medications with nutrition and one-on-one support to help its patients.
"The continued generosity shown by our alumni base is what makes this University so special," Scott said. "We cannot thank Spencer and all of the former Tar Heels who continue to pour endless amounts of support into the program, even after their athletic and academic careers are completed here in Chapel Hill."
