Wrestling Trio Collects Preseason Rankings

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The North Carolina wrestling trio of Lachlan McNeil, Gavin Kane, and Max Shaw were among those ranked in the 2023-24 InterMat Wrestling Preseason Rankings.
McNeil, entering his redshirt-sophomore season in Chapel Hill, was ranked fourth in the 141-pound weight class. A season ago, McNeil collected 27 wins, including 11 dual victories, on his way to a fourth-place finish at the 2023 NCAA Wrestling Championships to earn All-America status for the first time in his career. In addition to his success on the mat being named to the Amateur Wrestling News All-Rookie Team, McNeil was also named an NWCA Scholar All-America honoree.
A native of Milton, Ga., Kane enters the 2023-24 campaign slotted at sixth in the 184-pound weight class. The junior earned 25 wins a season ago, on his way to a runner-up finish at the ACC Championships and an eighth-place finish at the NCAA Championships, to earn All-America honors for the first time in his career. McNeil and Kane helped North Carolina post multiple All-America wrestlers for the fifth-straight year at the national tournament.
A two-time NCAA Championship qualifier, Shaw begins the year at No. 19 in the 197-pound weight class. Last season, Shaw collected 16 wins, including an opening round win at the NCAA Championships over Cole Urbas of Penn and the 197-pound title at the Last Chance Open.
As a team, the Tar Heels enter the season at No. 26 in the InterMat team rankings.
