January 23, 2024 | Track & Field
On Tuesday afternoon, the Atlantic Coast Conference announced that Delea Martins of the University of North Carolina was named the ACC Women's Freshmen Track Athlete of the Week, following her outstanding debut at the Dick Taylor Carolina Challenge hosted in Carolina's own Eddie Smith Field House.
In Martins' collegiate debut, she won the women's 300-meter, defeating competitors from Duke, High Point, N.C. Central and UNC Wilmington with a time of 39.43, her personal record.  Martins also served as the anchor on the winning women's 4x4 relay team. She was the only competitor at the Dick Taylor Carolina Challenge to win multiple events.
In high school, Martins won four Wisconsin state championships: two in the outdoor 200-meter, one in the 100-meter and one in the indoor 400-meter.
Martins and the Tar Heels will be back in action this weekend in University Park for the Penn State National Invitational.
