Tar Heels, David Ford Triumph Again In Williams Cup
October 22, 2024 | Men's Golf
University of North Carolina senior David Ford made a 23-foot birdie putt on the 16th hole for what proved to be the winning margin for both the team and individual titles Tuesday in the Williams Cup presented by STITCH at Eagle Point Golf Club in Wilmington.
Ford and UNC trailed by a stroke heading into the 16th hole, but walked off the green with the lead and then held off Arizona State and the Sun Devils' Connor Williams the final two holes for the victories.
It was Ford's second straight win in the Williams Cup and his fourth consecutive top-two finish in the event over his career as a Tar Heel. He also placed second as a freshman in 2022, tied for second in 2023 and won last season. The Peachtree Corners, Ga., native shot 25 under par in 12 career rounds in the Williams Cup at Eagle Point.
The win is the 23rd for the Tar Heels in Andrew DiBitetto's eighth season as head coach. UNC has won at least one team title in each of his eight seasons.
It was Ford's second win in as many starts this fall and his fourth career title, the most by a Tar Heel since Dustin Bray won a school-record seven times from 2001-04.
Ford shot 68-68-70 for a 10-under 206 total. That was one shot better than ASU's Williams (70-67-70) and two clear of Auburn's Josiah Gilbert (68-71-69).
Carolina's Maxwell Ford (69-72-70) tied for fifth place at 5-under 211. He began his final round bogey-double bogey but played the final 16 holes today at 5 under par with three birdies, an eagle and 12 pars.
Sophomore Hampton Roberts (75-74-68) tied for 14th at 1-over 217 after a third-round 68. He bogeyed the second hole then made five birdies and no bogeys the rest of the round to shoot 4 under.
Freshman Ethan Paschal (76-72-69) shot a 3-under 69 today, his lowest round as a Tar Heel. Paschal also tied for 14th place.
Keaton Vo (74-73-73) tied for 24th place at 4-over 220.
The Tar Heels were two shots off the lead heading into today's final round as Arizona State had edged UNC by a single stroke in each of the first two rounds. Midway through the third round, ASU was 13 under par and led UNC by seven strokes. But the Tar Heels shot 11 under par on the back nine to take the title.
