November 20, 2024 | General, Academics
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – University of North Carolina student-athletes established their highest-ever multi-year graduation rates for the fifth straight year and again set the record for the best single-year rate as reported in the NCAA's annual Graduation Success Rates.
Â
Student-athlete GSRs for the Tar Heels' incoming classes of 2014-15 through 2017-18 were a record 93%, up one percent from the previous year. The single-year rate was a record 96%.
Â
The NCAA's Graduation Success Rates measure graduation rates over a six-year period, factoring student-athletes who were on scholarship their first year and graduate from their respective university or leave the program via transfer to another university or professional opportunities while in good academic standing.
Â
The data released today includes the 2014-15 through 2017-18 incoming classes.
Â
Twenty-two of Carolina's teams met or exceeded the national average for their respective sports.
Â
Thirteen of Carolina's teams have multi-year GSRs of 100%, an increase of two from a year ago. They include women's basketball, men's and women's fencing, men's golf, gymnastics, women's lacrosse, rowing, women's soccer, softball, men's and women's swimming and diving, women's tennis and volleyball.
Â
Another five sports recorded GSRs of at least 90%, including baseball, women's cross country, field hockey and women's indoor and outdoor track and field. Nine additional programs exceeded 80 percent, including football and men's basketball.
Â
Baseball's rate was 91%, its highest since 2013, and softball reached 100% for the first time since 2008. Football (81%) and wrestling (82%) established program-best rates.
Â
The gymnastics team continued its perfect streak of reaching 100 percent for the 20th time in the 20-year history of the NCAA's GSR.
Â
Other streaks of five years or longer with 100 percent multi-year GSRs include women's swimming and diving (16 consecutive years), women's fencing (15), volleyball (14), women's lacrosse (eight), women's tennis (six) and women's basketball and men's golf (five).
