Men's T&F Ranks Fourth In USTFCCCA Program Of The Year Standings
March 19, 2024 | Track & Field
North Carolina Men's Track and Field is making waves in the USTFCCCA Program of the Year Standings, currently holding an impressive fourth position with 11 points in the mid-year update.Â
This places them among the elite programs in the nation, trailing only behind powerhouse teams like Arkansas and Oklahoma State, who claimed indoor track and field and cross country championships, respectively. Northern Arizona joins the ranks of these top-performing teams alongside the Tar Heels, as the only institutions to secure top-ten finishes in both cross country and indoor track and field.
Carolina's performance at the NCAA Championships underscores its strength and consistency across disciplines. In cross country, the Tar Heels secured a sixth-place finish, marking the program's second-best result in history, eclipsed only by a fifth-place finish in 1985. Meanwhile, their fifth-place finish in indoor track and field matches the program's previous best from 1973.
The USTFCCCA Program of the Year Award is the pinnacle of collegiate track and field recognition, and honors institutions that excel across all seasons—cross country, indoor track & field, and outdoor track & field. Eligibility hinges on consistent qualification for each NCAA Championship, with scoring based on team performance (1st place = 1 point, 2nd place = 2 points, and so forth) across all three championships. The institution with the lowest cumulative score wins the award.
Under the leadership of the Director of both the Track and Field and Cross Country teams, Chris Miltenberg, and the remarkable achievements of distance runner seven-time All-America standout Parker Wolfe, the Tar Heels are poised to finish out the historic season.Â
The outdoor track and field season kicks off at the Phoenix Invitational hosted by Elon University this Friday.
