CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The University of North Carolina scored 361 points, the seventh most in the country among the winter sports, to bolster the Tar Heels' overall third-place performance in the updated LEARFIELD Directors' Cup standings, which were released Thursday by the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics.
The men's indoor track and field team, led by Parker Wolfe's second-place finishes in both the 3,000 and 5,000 meters, tied for fifth place in the NCAA Championships. That tied the program's highest finish ever in the indoor track and field championship (also in 1973) and contributed 75 points, more than any other winter sport, to the UNC total.
Carolina has amassed 733.5 points in 13 sports to date this season, third most in the country behind Stanford (802.75) and Texas (746.5).
Notre Dame is fourth, Tennessee is fifth and Wisconsin, NC State, Penn State, Alabama and Ohio State round out the top 10.
Also scoring points for the Tar Heels in the winter sports were men's basketball (ninth place, 64 points), women's swimming and diving (17th, 57 points), women's basketball (17th, 50 points), wrestling (30th, 43 points), men's swimming and diving (33rd, 40 points) and men's and women's fencing (combined 21stplace finish, 32 points).
Carolina has six top-10 finishes thus far in NCAA post-season play. Field hockey won the national championship, men's and women's soccer and men's indoor track and field were fifth, men's cross country was sixth and men's basketball was ninth.
