CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Heavy rains and wet grounds forced postponement of the third round of the NCAA Chapel Hill Men's Golf Regional Tuesday at UNC's Finley Golf Club.
The third and final round of the regional is scheduled to resume Wednesday at 7:30 a.m. pending course conditions.
Thirteen of the 25 groups of competitors were able to tee off in the third round beginning at 10 a.m. before rain twice suspended play. The first group had only completed five holes before play was called off shortly after 2 p.m. for the duration of the day.
The NCAA moved the second round of the regional from today to Monday afternoon because of the forecast for rain Tuesday and Wednesday with the hope of playing all 54 holes by Wednesday evening. Seven groups had to finish their second rounds at 7:30 this morning.
The University of North Carolina's five players completed a combined 17 holes today at 6 under par. Dylan Menante was 2 under through five and Peter Fountain was 2 under through four holes. Austin Greaser, who is tied for second place in the individual standings, holed out from the bunker for a birdie on the first to reach 10 under par.
Jason Forrester of East Tennessee State, the overnight leader after Monday's action, was 2 under par to begin his final round to help ETSU move to 23 under. The Buccaneers have a three-stroke advantage on Clemson (-20). UNC is third at -19, Georgia Tech and Baylor are tied for fourth at 11 under, Long Beach State is sixth at 10 under and Alabama is seventh at 7 under.
The top five teams and the low individual not on one of those teams advance to the 2024 NCAA Championship May 24-29 in Carlsbad, Calif.
Clemson's Calahan Keever (-11) led after two rounds and was 1 under through two holes today to maintain a one-shot lead over Greaser (-10). Baylor's Johnny Keefer is third at 9 under with five players another two shots back at -7.
