Gymnastics To Be Featured In All-Access Documentary
May 16, 2024 | Women's Gymnastics
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Following its inaugural season in the Atlantic Coast Conference, North Carolina gymnastics continues to be part of history as the team is featured in an upcoming ESPN documentary entitled "The Return of ACC Gymnastics."Â
Presented by Ally, this unique all-access look is set to debut on Monday, May 27, at 7 p.m. ET on ACC Network. The trailer can be found here.Â
The league previously sponsored a conference championship for gymnastics in 1984, but this past year marked the first official ACC gymnastics season. The documentary follows the four conference teams that sponsor women's gymnastics – Clemson, Pitt, NC State and North Carolina – during the 2024 season.Â
ACC Network takes viewers behind the scenes as the four teams battle through the momentous season, on and off the mat. The documentary includes all four head coaches mic'd up at the ACC Championships, gymnasts analyzing the mental aspect of the sport, exclusive training content, time away from the mat with student-athletes and more.Â
The Tar Heels experienced many firsts during the historic 2024 campaign, culminating with a third-place finish at the ACC Championships. Lali Dekanoidze, who was named the conference's first-ever ACC Gymnast of the Week, was crowned the uneven bars champion.
Four Tar Heels in Dekanoidze (bars), Julia Knower (floor), Jessica Naranjo (beam) and Isabelle Schaefer (bars) earned All-ACC Championship Team honors. Dekanoidze (vault, bars) and Schaefer (bars) also garnered All-ACC First Team praise. Â
This past year featured several firsts for ACC Network's gymnastics coverage as well, with the first televised meets in network history coming as part of ESPN's inaugural Sprouts Farmers Market Collegiate Quad – an ESPN Events invitational gymnastics meet featuring 12 squads, including North Carolina.
