Â
Carlsbad, Calif. – Dylan Menante won his match 2&1 but Florida State made a late charge to defeat the University of North Carolina, 3-1, Tuesday in the quarterfinals in the 2024 NCAA Men's Golf Championship at the Omni La Costa Resort & Spa's North Course.
Â
The Tar Heels finish their season tied for fifth, Carolina's fourth consecutive top-five finish.
Â
Menante took a 1 up lead on his 13th hole and clinched his match against Cole Anderson and UNC's point with a conceded par on his 17th hole.
Â
Maxwell Ford was 3 down to ACC co-medalist Frederik Kjettrup after five holes, but rallied to take a 1 up lead with an eagle on the sixth hole (the 15th hole of the match). Ford's match was unfinished, however, as FSU clinched the victory with three holes to play.
Â
Brett Roberts defeated Peter Fountain 2&1, Luke Clanton came from 3 down to edge Austin Greaser 2&1 and Tyler Weaver beat David Ford, 3&2.
Â
Fountain led 1 up after 12 holes, but Roberts won the 13th, 14th and 16th holes to go 2 up and closed the match with a par on 17. Clanton was 3 down through 10 but won five of the next seven holes.
Â
"Florida State's a really good team and they deserved it today," says Carolina head coach Andrew DiBitetto. "Our guys played well. We had a lot of good shots and we hung tough but Florida State was the better team today. Just look at the seventh hole. Coming down the stretch, most of their guys hit it right down the middle of the fairway and that's a really difficult hole and a difficult green and they had balls in the proper spots and made a bunch of pars to close out the match. I'm always proud of our guys, the way they the way they go about their business, the way they compete and the way they represent our university.
Â
"Certainly, it was a good year. With the group we have I think more about their careers, our time with them, a lot of them now for five years. You know, we've won, we've lost and most importantly all these guys have grown. That's why we coach – to try to help them any way possible, to try to be mentors. Yes, we can reflect on the season but right now my brain goes to all the experiences and all the memories we've had with these guys. All the fun and the incredible people they are, and how much they've grown as young men from when they started at Carolina. I'll miss being around them and I'm really proud of them."
Â
Florida State will play Georgia Tech in one semifinal, while Auburn will play Ohio State in the other.
