Four Tar Heels Victorious At National Freestyle Duals

MANALAPAN TOWNSHIP, N.J. – Four University of North Carolina wrestlers were victorious this past weekend in freestyle competition, at the 2024 National Freestyle Duals.

Marco Tocci (57 KG), Derek Guanajuato (61 KG), Gavin Kane (86 KG) and Cade Lautt (92 KG) collected titles representing the Tar Heel Wrestling Club in the two-day event.

Tocci, who just completed his true freshman campaign in Chapel Hill, rattled off four-straight victories to secure the 57 KG title.

Fellow true freshman Derek Guanajuato outscored his opponents 32-6 in four bouts to claim the 61 KG belt.

In his first matchup of the day, Gavin Kane dropped his first match 13-12, but would respond with back-to-back technical falls to win his pool at 86 KG.

Rounding out the championship effort for the Tar Heels, Cade Lautt won three matches by a combined score of 27-1.

In total, 14 wrestlers saw action representing Carolina and the Tar Heel Wrestling Club in New Jersey. Joining the four champions on the mat this weekend were Leo Maguigad (61 KG), Max Martin (61 KG), Cullen Kane (70 KG), Colin Nugent (70 KG), Omaury Alvarez (74 KG), Isaias Estrada (74 KG), Marcus Murabito (79 KG), Carson Tenold (79 KG), Cade Tenold (79 KG) and Alberto Hernandez (125 KG).
