June 4, 2024 | General, Academics
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Carolina women's fencing scored a perfect 1000 for the 20th time in as many years and the Tar Heel football team established a record four-year rate for the second straight time to highlight the University of North Carolina's latest Academic Progress Rates for student-athletes, which were released on Tuesday.
Twenty of Carolina's teams exceed the national average per their respective sports in the multi-year (four-year) rates, including baseball, men's and women's basketball and football.
Carolina's single-year, all-sport rate of 989 was up two points from a year ago and its four-year rate of 991 increased by a point. This was the third consecutive year and fifth time in the last seven years the Tar Heels established an all-sport multi-year rate of at least 990.
The NCAA uses Academic Progress Rates to track the academic performance of scholarship students who compete on varsity teams. The score measures eligibility and retention each semester by student athletes at every NCAA institution. A perfect score is 1000, and the minimum NCAA benchmark is 930.Â
The current data reflects the 2022-23 school year; the multi-year rates include rates over the past four years from 2019-20 to 2022-23.
Women's fencing has scored 1000 every season since the NCAA began tracking APR in 2003-04. It is one of 12 Tar Heel teams that scored 1000 in the 2022-23 single-year rate and one of six that registered 1000s over the most recent four years.
Men's and women's basketball, women's cross country, men's and women's fencing, men's and women's golf, men's and women's lacrosse, men's soccer and men's and women's tennis all scored 1000 in 2022-23.
Men's and women's fencing, men's and women's golf, women's swimming and diving and women's tennis are the six teams to rate 1000 over the most recent four-year period. Those six teams and football rank among the top 10 percent nationally in their respective sports.
The football team measured a 996 multi-year rate, 14 points higher than its previous best which it set a year ago. The Tar Heels recorded the highest multi-year rate of any football team in the ACC and tied the third-highest among the Power 5 conferences.
Women's basketball set a multi-year high (995), men's track and field compiled a program-best multi-year rate (990) for the second consecutive year and baseball tied its best multi-year rate (989) for the third year in a row.
Women's tennis earned a 1000 for the 14th straight year and men's golf hit 1000 for an eighth straight year. Other notable individual program streaks of 1000s:
Twenty-seven of Carolina's 28 teams achieved single-year rates of 970 or higher and 25 had multi-year rates of 980 or better.
