Fountain Wins On 21st Hole, Advances In U.S. Am

Peter Fountain, a senior at the University of North Carolina this past spring, made two long putts on Wednesday to advance to the round of 32 in the 2024 United States Amateur at Hazeltine National Golf Club in Chaska, Minn.

Fountain made a 40-footer for birdie on the first playoff hole this morning to conclude stroke play and advance to match play, and a 35-footer for birdie to beat Vanderbilt's Jackson Van Paris on the third extra hole in their afternoon match.

Fountain, a Raleigh native, was the 2021 ACC champion and first-team All-America and started on four straight UNC teams that finished in the top five in the NCAA Championships.

Van Paris, from Pinehurst, led 1 up after the first and third holes, but Fountain went ahead on the fifth and never trailed again. Fountain led 2 up with two holes to play but Van Paris won the final two holes of regulation to square the match.

Fountain plays Patrick Sheehan (Penn State) in the round of 32 on Thursday morning.

In another round of 64 matchup pitting a pair of All-Americas, UCLA's Omar Morales won the 18^th hole to edge UNC's David Ford, 1 up.

Morales led 2 up through 11 before Ford won the 12^th and 14^th holes to pull even. They halved the next three holes before Morales won the final hole with a par.
