Cross Country Sweeps Season-Opening Race

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The UNC men's and women's cross country teams both took home first-place finishes on Friday morning in a season-opening meet with Charlotte and Queens University of Charlotte at Frank Liske Park.
Racing on a 5K course in the Charlotte Opener, the Tar Heels placed six of the top ten finishers on the men's side and claimed the top five spots on the women's side.
Carolina captured the men's win with 24 points while the women won with 15 points. Charlotte tallied 34 points in the men's race and 48 points in the women's race to finish second, while Queens scored 83 points in the men's race and 84 points on the women's side to place third.
Senior Fatima Alanis crossed the finish line first with a time of 17:23.6, three-tenths of a second ahead of teammate Brynn Brown (17:23.9). Less than a second behind Brown was Taryn Parks in 17:24.2, followed by Masciarelli in fourth with a time of 17:24.5 and Ava Dobson with a time of 17:25.0 to give UNC a sweep of the top five spots. Eva Klingbeil and Sasha Neglia each placed inside the top 10.
On the men's side, the Tar Heels placed six runners in the top ten.
Colton Sands was the top UNC finisher at No. 2 in 14:56.8, followed by Aiden Neal in fourth at 14:58.2, Will Coogan in fifth at 14:58.5, Jacob Laney at sixth 14:59.9, Max Murphy in seventh at 15:01.7 and Luke Wiley in eighth at 15:01.8. Joe Sapone finished inside the top 12 with a time of 15:11.6.
The Tar Heels are back in action in two weeks at the Virginia Invitational on Saturday, Sept. 14.
