Women's Golf Shatters All-Time UNC Record At Cavalier Regional Preview
September 23, 2024 | Women's Golf
Inez Ng and Ing Iadpluem both shot 65 in the second round to lead the University of North Carolina women's golf team to a record-shattering day in the Cavalier Regional Preview Monday at the Birdwood Golf Course in Charlottesville, Va.
The 65s tie the second-lowest individual rounds ever by a Tar Heel.
They led Carolina to a 13-under-par 271 in the second round, the lowest total score and most strokes under par in a round in UNC women's golf history.
The Tar Heels shot 6-under 278 in the first round in the morning and head into Tuesday's final round at 19-under 549. Carolina has an 11-shot lead on host Virginia (8-under 560) and a 20-stroke advantage on third-place Tennessee (1-over 569).
Ng, a junior from Singapore, has the individual lead at 8 under after shooting 69-65 on Monday. Iadpluem, a sophomore from Thailand, is second at 6 under with rounds of 71-65.
The 65s are only the fourth and fifth instances in UNC history a player shot 65 or better.
Megan Streicher, who set Carolina's 18-hole record with a 64 last season at UCF, is tied for sixth after rounds of 70-70.
Freshman Helen Yeung shot 68 in the morning and is tied for 10th at 1 under par. Reagan Southerland (75-71) is tied for 25th. Freshman Katie Vu (71-70) is also tied for 10th as an individual entry.
The Tar Heels' second-round 271 broke the previous 18-hole team record by five strokes (UNC shot 276 in the third round of the 2023 NCAA Pullman Regional and the 2023 MountainView Collegiate).
UNC was 13 under par this afternoon, which broke the previous UNC record of 12 under par in a round in those same tournaments.
The Tar Heels shot 18 under over the first 36 holes on the par 5s and 2 under on the par 3s.
Ng made seven birdies and one bogey to shoot 65. Iadpluem eagled the 524-yard, par-5 12th hole, made five birdies and a single bogey for her 65.
