North Carolina senior David Ford matched the low round of the day with a 5-under-par 65 and the Tar Heels shot 6 under in the second round to climb into fourth place in the Ben Hogan Collegiate Invitational after Monday's 36 holes at historic Colonial Country Club in Fort Worth, Texas.
Carolina started slowly, shooting 8 over par and standing 14th out of 15 teams midway through the first round. From that point, however, UNC shot 10 under par over the next round and a half, ending the day in fourth place as one of only four teams under par.
UNC shot 4-over 284 in the first round and 6-under 274 in the second. Oklahoma leads at 9-under 551, Texas is second at 7 under, Auburn is third at 4 under and the Tar Heels are fourth at 2-under 558.
Georgia and Arizona State are tied fifth, 10 strokes behind the Tar Heels.
David Ford, who leads the field with 13 birdies, shot 1-under 69 in the first round and followed that with seven birdies and a 65 in the afternoon. He is tied for the lead at 6-under 134 with Texas' Daniel Bennett, who shot 65-69.
It was Ford's sixth round of 65 or better as a Tar Heel. It also was the 10th time in his collegiate career he opened with two rounds in the 60s.
Carolina's Hampton Roberts (72-70) is tied for 19th at 2-over 142, Maxwell Ford (74-69) is T24 at 3-over 143, Grant Roscich (69-76) is T39 at 5-over 145 and Keaton Vo (76-70) is T47 at 6-over 146.
