Tar Heels First in Learfield Directors’ Cup Final Fall Standings

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The University of North Carolina finished the fall semester No. 1 in the country in the 2024-25 Learfield Directors' Cup standings. The Tar Heels entered the football bowl season second behind Stanford but edged ahead of the Cardinal with 25 additional points by playing in the Fenway Bowl in Boston.
Carolina's fall sports amassed 422.5 points, 9.5 ahead of Stanford. Penn State was third, and BYU, Virginia, Notre Dame, Oregon, Ohio State, Washington and Texas ranked four through 10.
ACC schools ranked 1-2-5-6, added four more teams from 11-20 and two others from 21-25, giving the league a total of 10 programs in the top 25.
Carolina's fall sports included: the Tar Heels' 23rd women's soccer national championship for 100 points in the standings; field hockey tied for third place (83 points), men's cross country placed sixth (73.5 points), women's cross country was 11th (66), volleyball tied for 17th (50), men's soccer tied for 33rd (25) and football played in a bowl game (25).
Last year, the Tar Heels placed seventh in the final 2023-24 standings. It was the fifth-consecutive top-10 finish and eighth top 10 in the past nine years in the all-sports competition that measures NCAA post-season success. The seventh-place finish was UNC's 25th Top 10 in the 30-year history of the competition, the third most among all schools in Division I.
