Carolina Athletics Spotlights World Mental Health Day
October 14, 2025 | General, Student-Athlete Development
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Carolina Athletics highlighted World Mental Health Day in the Loudermilk Blue Zone on Friday, Oct. 10th, by spreading awareness and staffing a table with goodies as one of the many ways UNC stays committed to serving its student-athletes on a daily basis.
Student-Athlete Mental Health Alliance board members Amy Wozniak (gymnastics) and Reggie Love II (football) led a tabling event for student-athletes to visit throughout their day. The table included stress relief balls, energy snacks and more mental health performance giveaways.
"We get the opportunity to do these fun events that are really chill, but also serve a bigger purpose," Wozniak said. "Destigmatizing mental health, making it a normal topic of conversation and making it a part of our community is something we are devoted to as a group. By doing this event on campus and bringing people together today allows the topic of mental health to be an open conversation."
"This activation is important to me because as a student-athlete we go through so many stressors and just life in general," Love added. "Being able to take time and focus on yourself not only helps your performance but also helps your quality of life. Your mental health is pretty much all you have, so it is important to take care of it."
Staff members from the Mental Health and Performance Psychology (MHPP) department were also in attendance at the event, including Josh Wright, the mental health fellow. Wright primarily focuses on counseling and mental performance workshops with UNC student-athletes.
"Bringing awareness to mental health, especially among student-athletes, is very important to me," Wright added. "Most times there is a stigma that student-athletes mask and hide that they are struggling with everyday problems and so we as a team are committed to making sure they have a space to come to, more specially a confidential and comfortable space for them. We are proud to provide that to our student-athletes and happy to be out here advertising that service to them today."
