Freshmen Mayew & Schinnerer Advance To ITA Regional Main Draw

CARY, N.C.—Tar Heel freshmen Ian Mayew and Kase Schinnerer both won a pair of matches on Thursday in the qualifying draw of the 2025 Intercollegiate Tennis Association Carolina Regional, advancing to Friday's main draw.

Meanwhile, sophomore Nick Mangiapane won his first-round match before falling in the second round on Thursday.

The Tar Heel trio swept their morning matches to move into the second round of qualifying. To start the morning, Mangiapane beat Gardner-Webb's Boyd Schreiber in straight sets, 6-4, 6-4. Mayew also won his 9 a.m. match by coming from behind to down UNCW's Andrew Hayduke, 2-6, 6-4, 6-4. Later, Schinnerer defeated Campbell's Fernindina Fragasso, 4-6, 6-0, 6-3.

In the second round, Mayew cruised past Coastal Carolina's Jack Dixon into the main draw, 6-2, 6-0. His freshman classmate and doubles partner Schinnerer topped Evan Duggal of Furman, 6-2, 6-4 to reach the main draw. UNCW's Alex Degabriele defeated Mangiapane, 6-3, 6-2 later on Thursday.

The two singles finalists and the doubles champion this weekend at the Carolina Regional will earn bids to the NCAA Individual Championships next month in Orlando.

Doubles play will begin in Cary on Friday along with main draw action.
