Another Big Day For Tar Heel Men At ITA Sectional Friday
November 7, 2025 | Men's Tennis
CHAPEL HILL, N.C.—University of North Carolina players went 3-0 in singles and won a pair of doubles matches on Friday in the second day of action at the Men's ITA East Sectional at the Chewning Tennis Center.
Roan Jones and Ian Mayew got the afternoon off to a good start with back-to-back, straight-set victories in their matches in the round of 16. Jones picked up the first win of the day when he defeated NC State's William Manning, 7-5, 6-3. Mayew followed with a 6-2, 6-1 win over the Wolfpack's Jules Leroux.
It took three sets, but Niels Ratiu joined teammates Jones and Mayew in the sectional quarterfinals when he topped Sachin Palta of Columbia, 6-3, 3-6, 6-2. With another win on Saturday in the quarters, Jones Mayew and Ratiu would earn an NCAA Singles Championship bid.
Sophomores Nick Mangiapane and Anthony Wright kept the momentum going by grabbing the Tar Heels' first doubles win of the afternoon. They topped Penn's Vojtech Vales and Shaurya Bharadwaj, taking a marathon first set by a score of 7-6 (8) before taking the second frame, 6-4.
Mayew and classmate Kase Schinnerer also won their doubles match, besting Ernesto Ruy and Othman Bezzaz of Saint Joseph's, 6-4, 6-2. Mayew and Schinnerer will meet Mangiapane and Wright in one of Saturday's doubles semifinals, and the winner will clinch an NCAA Doubles Championship berth.
The ITA Sectional Championships are the last chance for players to qualify for the 2025 NCAA Singles and Doubles Championships next month in Orlando.
Each 2025 ITA Sectional Championship will have a draw size of 32 players in singles and 16 doubles teams. From this, six singles players from each section (24 nationally) will qualify for the NCAA Singles Championship (semifinalists and two quarterfinal playoff winners from each sectional).
Meanwhile, three doubles teams from each section (12 total) will qualify for the NCAA Doubles Championship through the Sectional Championships (champion, finalist, third place).
The ITA East Sectional will continue from the Chewning Tennis Center on Saturday and Sunday.
