Indoor Track Opens On The Road

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Track and field is officially underway as Carolina will send split squads out to compete this weekend for the first meets of the season. Max Stakun-Pickering will be the lone Tar Heel representative, competing in the heptathlon at the Liberty Kick Off meet in Lynchburg, Va., on Thursday, December 5 at 1:30 p.m. EST. The live results are available on Blue Ridge Timing.
In Boston, a few distance runners will race at the Sharon Colyear-Danville Season Opener, scheduled for Saturday, December 6, which will be live-streamed on FloTrack. The live results can be found on Lancer Timing. Locally, select student-athletes will compete at the JDL Early Bird Invitational in Winston-Salem, which will also take place over the weekend of December 6-7.
Last Time At: Sharon Colyear-Danville Season Opener (2024)
Ethan Strand (7:30.15) rewrote the NCAA record book with his historic 3000m performance. He opened last year's indoor season at the Sharon Colyear-Danville Season Opener. Strand's finish set a new collegiate record in the race. He shattered the previous record by six seconds. Strand was named the Atlantic Coast Conference and National Athlete Of The Week.

Last Indoor Season:Â
The Tar Heels brought home two national championships during the indoor season. Strand and Makayla Paige led the way. Strand's national title capped off one of the greatest indoor seasons in history. He was named the National men's track athlete of the year. He also became the first student-athlete to break the 3,000m and mile NCAA records in the same season.
Paige had an incredible indoor season, earning the conference's indoor women's track athlete of the year and winning the 800m national championship.
