Streicher Is 1st Tar Heel To Play In Augusta National Women's Amateur
April 1, 2025 | Women's Golf
Â
For the first time in the six-year history of the event, a Tar Heel will be competing in the 2025 Augusta National Women's Amateur.
Â
Megan Streicher, a junior from Cape Town, South Africa, and Carolina's all-time leader in single-season and career scoring average, accepted the Augusta National Golf Club's invitation to compete in the ANWA.
Â
"Megan being the first UNC player to compete in the Augusta National Women's Amateur is an incredible milestone for our program," says head coach Aimee Neff. "She has set numerous school records, led our team with kindness and helped make everyone around her better. She earned the opportunity to play in the Augusta Women's Amateur because of her relentless work ethic, passion for the game and success."
Â
Seventy-two players from around the world will play in the first two rounds at the Champions Retreat Golf Club in Augusta on Wednesday, April 2, and Thursday, April 3.
Â
All 72 players will play a practice round at the Augusta National Golf Club (which will host the Masters next week) on Friday, April 4. The top 30 players and ties following the first 36 holes advance to compete in the final round at the Augusta National Golf Club on Saturday, April 4.
Â
Streicher has been a mainstay at the top of the Tar Heel lineup since her first season, when she set the UNC freshman scoring average at 73.33 and was Carolina's top player in the four of the last five tournaments, including the ACC Championship and NCAA Pullman Regional.
Â
As a sophomore in 2023-24, she earned All-ACC honors and set the single-season UNC scoring record at 71.83. That included a school-record 64 in the opening round of the UCF Challenge, one of three tournaments the Tar Heels won that season.
Â
Last summer, Streicher won the Carolinas Women's Amateur and advanced to match play in the U.S. Women's Amateur that was played at Southern Hills in Tulsa.
Â
This season, Streicher has been a model of consistency, posting six top-10 finishes in eight tournaments. That includes four consecutive top-four performances – T3rd at Folds of Honor, T2nd at the Cavalier Regional Preview (which UNC won), T3rd at the Ruth's Chris Tar Heel Invitational and 4th at the Landfall Tradition.
Â
The 32nd-ranked player in the nation is the anchor of a Tar Heel lineup that has climbed up the polls to No. 10 in the current NCAA Scoreboard/Clippd rankings.
Â
"The growth of Carolina women's golf shows the potential of this program," says Streicher. "We have a great facility and UNC is an incredible school, so there's a recipe for success to bring in many more talented players to play here."
Â
Streicher was the first player to commit to play for the Tar Heels when Neff was named the head coach in the spring of 2021. Neff had seen her play for the first time in the AJGA Annika Invitational in St. Augustine's, Fla.
Â
"I recruited her when I was the head coach at Florida Atlantic, but when I came back to Carolina as the head coach, she called me with an interest in playing at UNC and committed in the first two weeks I was on the job," says Neff. "She has really helped turn the program around culturally and in our performance, helping us go from a team that was ranked in the mid-40s or 50s to one that has been ranked in the top 20 and even the top 10 all year.
Â
"Megan has a tremendous work ethic and her game translates professionally, so playing in the Augusta National Women's Amateur will be a big test and an opportunity to compete against the top amateurs in the world."
Â
Streicher will be paired with Arizona State's Patience Rhodes and Ohio State's Kary Hollenbaugh in the first round, beginning at 8:58 a.m.
Â
The first two rounds will be televised on the Golf Channel from 1:30-3:30 p.m. on April 2 and 3.
Â
NBC will broadcast the final round at the Augusta National Golf Club on April 4 from Noon to 3 p.m.
Â
The winner receives a five-year invitation to play in the Augusta National Women's Amateur (if the player maintains amateur status), and invitations to play in the 2025 U.S. Women's Open, AIG Women's Open, Chevron Championship, Evian Championship and numerous other prominent amateur tournaments.
