January 8, 2026 | General
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Josh Borfitz, who has served as Carolina Athletics' Associate Athletic Director/Controller since 2017, has been promoted to Senior Associate Athletic Director/Chief Financial Officer. He will transition into his new role over the next month as current Senior Associate AD/CFO Martina Ballen, who has worked in the UNC Athletics Business Office for the last 38 years, retires at the end of January.
"Josh's steady presence and trusted expertise have been instrumental to ensuring sound fiscal management and long-range financial stability for Carolina Athletics,'' said Director of Athletics Bubba Cunningham. "He is both personable and analytical, and he has done an outstanding job working within the department and with campus partners to ensure accuracy and alignment while forecasting for the future. We are happy to have him in this key leadership role."
Borfitz, who played men's basketball and earned his bachelor's degree and MBA at Ithaca College, has been a valued member of the Carolina Athletics' financial leadership team over the past eight years as the department prepared for significant financial changes related to revenue share and NIL. He has been pivotal to the department's budgeting process, revenue generation efforts, internal and external reporting and the preparation of coaches' contracts. In addition to his duties in the Business Office, Borfitz oversees the Finley Golf Club and serves as the secondary sport administrator for the Men's Golf program.
In his expanded role as Senior Associate AD/CFO, Borfitz will serve as part of Cunningham's Executive Leadership Team and manage all aspects of the department's financial management, including budget development, forecasting, fiscal policy and strategic financial planning while ensuring full compliance with University, ACC and NCAA regulations. He also will supervise the Athletics Business and Human Resources units.
"I'm incredibly grateful to Martina Ballen for the opportunity to join Carolina Athletics eight years ago and for the trust placed in me along the way," Borfitz said. "I quickly learned how special this university is – Carolina has shaped so much of my personal and professional life, and I'm honored to step into this role. I'm sincerely thankful to Bubba Cunningham for his mentorship and the many opportunities he has afforded me. I have tremendous respect for the leadership of Bubba and [Executive Associate AD] Steve Newmark, and I look forward to working alongside this outstanding team in support of our student-athletes and staff."
