Philadelphia, Pa. - There is no more historic venue than Franklin Field during Penn Relays, set on the backdrop of thousands of screaming fans, the women's distance medley relay squad rewrote the standard for the event by breaking the NCAA record in a blistering 10:36.82.

Carolina won its twelfth Penn Relays Wheel overall. It was their fourth win in the women's DMR, the first since 2003. Carolina has now won back-to-back wheels for the first time since 2003.

Stanford's squad set the pace for the race as they broke away from the pack during the last 200 meters of the first leg Sydney Masciarelli kept Carolina in the race as they ran patiently behind the Cardinal and Providence. Delea Martins powered through the 800m leg of the race, keeping Carolina within striking distance. After a brilliant run by Makayla Paige, the Tar Heels handed the baton off to Vera Sjoberg to bring home the victory. Heading into the bell lap, Sjoberg was on the Mena Scatchard, the Stanford runner's hip as the duo had roughly an eighty-meter gap into heading the home stretch as Scatchard tried to outkick Vera Sjoberg, but the All-American passed her on the outside, winning by a half step. Carolina swarmed the track, hugging, as realization set in that not only had they won a Penn Relays wheel but also run the fastest DMR in NCAA history.

Carolina set the NCAA, Penn Relays, ACC, and school record in the women's DMR. The group was the named College Track Performance of the Day for day two of Penn Relays.
