Swimming & Diving Off To Hot Start In Summer Competitions

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The North Carolina swimming and diving program has had five Tar Heels competing around the world already this summer with another group scheduled for competitions in July and August. Ben Delmar, Ciro Mejia, Xavier Ruiz, Skyler Smith and Aranza Vazquez Montano have hit the pool for meets in May and June.

Delmar took seventh place in the 200 breast at the AP Race London International, while Ruiz finished fifth in the 200 IM, fifth in the 200 breast and ninth in the 100 breast at the TYR Pro Series stop in Sacramento.

Smith took part in the Mare Nostrum Swim Tour, competing in the Monaco and Canet legs. In Monaco, she finished second in the speed tournament and sixth in the 100 breast. At the Canet leg, Smith took second in the 50 breast and fifth in the 100 breast.

On the diving circuit, Ciro Mejia claimed fourth on the 10-meter platform at the Canadian Summer Senior Nationals. As a result, he earned a selection for the Canadian national team that competed at the Madrid International, where he qualified for the finals and finished ninth. Vazquez Montano helped Team Mexico earn silver in the mixed team event and went on to place fifth on the 3-meter springboard at the Diving World Cup Super Final in Beijing, China.

Coming up, Tar Heels are scheduled to compete at the Central American Games, the European Championships and the Toyota National Championships. All three meets are scheduled for late July and move into early August.
