General: A solid returning letterman to the Tar Heel team in the butterfly and sprint freestyle events...has the potential to make a big impact in the butterfly and medley relays…swam for coach Pat Hogan at the Mecklenburg Aquatic Club...won the Mecklenburg Aquatic Club coaches award in 1998...a solid student...maintains a 3.087 cumulative GPA.
2000-2001: At the 2000 Nike Cup, he finished fourth in the 100 fly and sixth in the 200 fly (1:52.03), a lifetime best…earned Dean’s List kudos for the spring semester…an ACC Academic Honor Roll member.
1999-2000: At the 1999 Nike Cup, he dropped nearly two and a half seconds off his personal best time in the 100 fly (49.38)...at the 2000 ACC Championships, he finished 10th in the 100 fly and 19th with a personal best in the 200 fly (1:52.14)...also had a personal best in the 50 free (21.19)…his time in the 100 fly ranked as the 10th best performance ever by a Tar Heel in that event…named to 2000 ACC Academic Honor Roll...was named the tarheelblue.com UNC Student-Athlete of the Week August 27, 2000 for his academic accomplishments.
Prep: A June 3, 1999 alumnus of David W. Butler High School in Matthews, N.C....swam on the varsity team there for four years...was the most valuable swimmer on his high school team in both 1998 and 1999...was named an NBC-6 Student Athlete of the Week in 1999...a member of the National Honor Society.
Personal: Given name is Andrew David Hathaway...nicknamed “Anteater” by his teammates...has two sisters, including junior Katie Hathaway, a member of the UNC women’s swimming team...his oldest sister, Darcy, swam for the University of Texas...is the son of Kenneth and Janet Hathaway...was born on May 20, 1981 in Abeline, Texas...athlete he most admires is the Los Angeles Lakers’ Kobe Bryant because he says he possesses an amazing jump shot...biggest sports thrill was beating former Tar Heel team captain Brad Kline in game seven of a best of seven series in ping pong...claims to have completely memorized the text of Eddie Murphy’s album “Delirious”...political science major...would like to be a commercial pilot.
