General: A strong performer for the Tar Heels...two-year letter winner...specializes in the backstroke and also swims the freestyle and the butterfly...has one of the top grade point averages on the team at 3.231...an ACC Honor Roll and Dean's List student.
1998-99: At the 1999 ACC Championships, he finished eighth in the 200-yard backstroke and 14th in the 100-yard backstroke...named to 1999 Atlantic Coast Conference Academic Honor Roll...selected for Dean's List in spring semester of 1999.
1997-98: Swam well for the Tar Heels all season in the backstroke events...competed as a non-scoring participant in the ACC Championships...won the U.S.S. Middle Atlantic championship in the 100-meter backstroke during the summer of 1998.
Prep: Graduated on June 4, 1997 from Manheim Township High School in Lancaster, Pa....was a four-year swimming letterman there in the 100-yard backstroke, 50-yard freestyle, 100-yard freestyle and 100-yard butterfly...was the Pennsylvania state high school champion in the 100-yard backstroke in 1996, breaking the state record...captained the MTHS swimming team his senior year...was an All-League and All-State selection his freshman through senior years and an All-America selection his junior and senior years...was elected to the National Honor Society at MTHS.
Personal: Full name is Matthew Sayre Baldwin...nicknamed "The Hefty Redhead"...has one brother and one sister...was born in Lancaster, Pa....son of Roy and Cindy Baldwin...his father played soccer at Cornell and his brother, Andy, was a swimmer at Duke...hobbies include eating, sleeping, Tomfoolery, gaining weight and red-regaing...athletes he most admires are Dave Weeks and his fellow Santa Clara teammates because they train really, really hard...admits to having a temper...biggest sports thrill was winning the 1999 annual Run Swim because he didn't finish his first two years and he surprised everybody with his performance...says that he socially dependent on Dave Green...advertises that he is the best looking male on the team and still available...wants to own own construction company with teammate Kert Johnson.
