2000 U.S. Olympic Trials Qualifier
General: Returning letter winner for the Tar Heels who this past summer made her 2000 Olympic Trials cut in the 100-meter butterfly...met that time while finishing 20th in the 100-meter butterfly at the 1999 U.S.S Summer Nationals...is a transfer from Auburn University where she swam for two years...was a Southeastern Conference finalist there...also an honors student at Auburn...made a strong impact on the UNC team in the freestyle events while also swimming the butterfly and the individual medley...a top scholar-athlete, she possesses a 3.513 cumulative grade point average entering her senior year.
1998-99: At the 1999 ACC Championships, she finished fifth in both the 100-yard and 200-yard butterfly events and 10th in the 200-yard individual medley...named to 1999 Atlantic Coast Conference Academic Honor Roll...tapped for Dean's List in fall semester of 1998...was also selected for Dean's List in spring semester of 1999.
1997-98 at Auburn University: Finished eighth in the 100-yard freestyle (51.59) and 11th in the 200-yard freestyle (1:51.09) at the Southeastern Conference Championships.
1996-97 at Auburn University: Finished 12th in the 200-yard freestyle, 19th in the 100-yard freestyle and 22nd in the 200-yard individual medley at the SEC Championships...was also a member of the third-place 800 free relay team at the league meet...at the 1997 World Maccabiah Games, she won four gold medals and three silver medals...earned CSCAA honorable mention Academic All-America honors.
Prep: Graduated from East Mecklenburg High School in Charlotte, N.C. in June 1996...was the high school team MVP...had been swimming for 10 years coming out of high school...was a member of the North Carolina All-Star Team...earned the Kanawah Insurance Student-Athlete of the Year Award...was a scholastic All-America and member of the National Honor Society.
Personal: Given name is Ilana Rose Kavadlo...nicknamed "Zena"...is the daughter of Gene and Ali Kavadlo, both of whom are professional musicians...was born on October 24, 1978 in Charlotte, N.C....has one brother...athletes she most admires are distance swimmers in general...hobbies include watching TV and reading...biggest sports thrill was her 100 fly at nationals last summer because she reached a new level with that swim and it made her happier than any swim she ever made...majors in journalism and mass communications.
