2017-18: Went 18-11 in his redshirt junior season with a 6-9 dual record at 125 and 133 pounds • Went 1-3 in ACC duals • Picked up a 10-3 decision in his ACC dual win against Virginia Tech’s Ryan More • Won the Pembroke Classic with four wins.

2016-17: Finished 8-15 and 5-8 in duals as the starter at 125 pounds • Had a pair of wins at the Journeymen Classic over opponents from Arizona State and West Virginia • Opened dual competition by pinning Old Dominion's Steven Simpson • In one of the most exciting moments of the season, upset No. 15 Markus Simmons in the final bout of the dual to help UNC knock off Iowa State in Chapel Hill.

2015-16: Finished 8-18 and 2-8 in duals, primarily at 133 pounds • Won three times at the Wolfpack Open and the Wilkes Open • Defeated Edinboro's Anthony Rivera and The Citadel's Caleb Smith in dual competition • Had five bonus-point wins on the year - one major, one tech fall and three pins.

Prep/Personal: Two-time NHSCA All-American • Three-time Section XI place-winner and team captain at Shoreham-Wading River High School • Took fourth in the state as a senior, capping a career in which he posted a 198-26 record • Four year academic acheivement award recipient • James John Szymanski is the son of John and Kendl Szymanski • Birthday is Oct. 7 • Wrestled for Joe Condon at Shoreham-Wading River • Sister Heather plays lacrosse at the College of Wooster • Sister Rachel attended Amherst College.
