Career Best Times: 48.92 in 100 back (7th in school history); 1:46.35 in 200 back (6th in school history); 1:52.47 in 200 IM.
General: Tar Heel team captain each of the past two seasons...served as a tri-captain last year and co-captain this season ... a tremendous swimmer in the backstroke who also swims the IM...a Carolina Leadership Academy Veteran Leader.
Long Course Highlights: Swam the 100 and 200-meter backstrokes at the 2009 U.S. Open...set lifetime bests in both events at 1:00.00 and 2:08.28, respectively.
2010-11 (Junior): Scored in both backstroke events at the ACC Championships...was 14th in the 200 back in 1:47.42 and 15th in the 100 back in 49.15...was also 30th in the 200 IM in 1:52.47.
2009-10 (Sophomore): Was named the ACC Swimmer of the Week on February 9, 2010 after his performance against NC State and in the Triangle College Cup...won the squad's Osterneck Family Unsung Hero award...took two first places in the Triangle College Cup...won the 100 back in 48.92 and the 200 back in 1:47.49...swept the backstroke events in the dual meets versus NC State and Georgia Tech...won the 100 back versus Georgia and 200 back versus East Carolina.
2008-09 (Freshman): Won the 200 back in the dual meet against Duke with a time of 1:49.68...swam personal best times in the 100 back (49.12), 200 back (1:46.35) and 200 IM (1:53.70) at the Tar Heel Last Chance Meet.
Prep: A graduate of Bronxville High School...active in club swimming since he was nine years old...swam for his high school team for three years...named a high school All-America three times in the 100-yard backstroke...team captain of Section One boys' high school swim team...was the David Engalls Award recipient, an award given to the athlete who shows dedication and determination in scholarship and athletics at his high school.
Personal: Name is James Joseph Flannery...son of Robert and Nonie Flannery...was born March 20, 1990 in New York City...has three brothers and two sisters...one of his sisters is on the track team at Yale University...communication studies major.

Section #1: Swimming & Diving
1. The best thing about being a Tar Heel swimmer is being a part of the Tar Heel family.
2. My favorite thing about competing for Coach DeSelm is his passion for the sport.
3. Since last year the aspects of my training I've worked on the most are my turns and underwaters.
4. My best friend on another college swimming team is Teddy Perley at Colgate.
5. My greatest strength as a swimmer is my competitiveness.
Section #2: Hobbies & Interests
1. Away from the pool and academic pursuits I like to spend time watching TV and performing eating challenges.
2. The best movie I've seen recently is Fast Five.
3. If I could compete in another sport at UNC it would be basketball.
4. The music act I'd most like to see in person is Marky Mark and the Funky Bunch.
5. The personal interest I have that might surprise my teammates is that I can conquer the Rubik's Cube with my eyes closed.
Section #3: Food & Beverage
1. After a big meet, I'd like to eat at a buffet spread that included steak, twice baked potatoes and my mom's chocolate chip cookies.
2. My favorite beverage is Coca-Cola.
3. My favorite food made by a relative is my mom's Grandma Kay's Apple Pie.
4. My favorite place to eat in Chapel Hill is Armadillo Grill.
5. My favorite guilty pleasure food wise is McDonalds.
Section #4: Personality
1. If I possessed the gift of time travel I'd like to go to ancient Japan to fight alongside Tom Cruise as a Samurai.
2. My most prized personal possession is my Carmelo Anthony Knicks jersey.
3. If I could go to dinner with a famous person it would be Derek Jeter.
4. My dream job is to be the president of Nike.
5. The most interesting person I've met at UNC is Sean Lane.
