UNC Athletics Celebrates Black History Month

February marks Black History Month, an important time to remember and recognize Black people who have meant so much to our history while we also to continue to have conversations about our present and future.

TAR HEEL TRAILBLAZERS
On GoHeels.com, you can read about the 12 former African-American student-athletes who have received Tar Heel Trailblazer awards and what they've been up to since being honored. Since its inception in 2014, the award celebrates individuals who paved the way for success in all aspects of the student-athlete experience. New Tar Heel Trailblazers are selected ever other year and were most recently honored last year.The Tar Heel Trailblazer award recipients are:
2014 - Courtney Bumpers, Robyn Hadley, Ricky Lanier and Charlie Scott
2015 - Charles Waddell, Karen Stevenson and Stuart Scott
2016 - Sharon Couch and Phil Ford
2018 - Peter Henry and Rochelle Small-Toney
2020 - Willie Cooper
2022 - Synthia Scott Kearney and Reggie McAfee
• Synthia Scott Kearney was the first African American on the UNC women's soccer team and the city of Gastonia's first female battalion chief.
• Reggie McAfee's goals never were to win a national championship or be recognized for his achievements, yet he has done each of those things and exceedingly more.

ONLINE RESOURCES
On Campus: The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill will celebrate Black History Month with various events throughout February, including lectures, panels and performances.
• The annual African American History Month Lecture will headline this year’s events. Marcia Chatelain, a professor of history and African American studies at Georgetown University, will be the keynote speaker of the virtual lecture on Feb. 9 at 6:30 p.m.
This year’s highlights also include:- A monthlong discussion series hosted by the UNC School of Social Work. The “Black History Month Research Series” will showcase the research of faculty, doctoral students and alumni who are addressing inequities.
- A lecture on race and memory at Carolina hosted by the Institute for the Arts & Humanities on Feb. 18 at 2 p.m. William Sturkey, an associate professor in the history department, will be joined by civil rights activist and historian Danita Mason-Hogans for the event at Hyde Hall.
- A performance by acclaimed actor and playwright Mike Wiley ’04 (MFA) at the Friday Center on Feb. 27 at 3 p.m. The play, “Blood Done Sign My Name,” brings to life the recollections of author Tim Tyson surounding the 1970 murder of Henry “Dickie” Marrow in Oxford, North Carolina.
