The UNC track and field program announced Thursday the addition of new assistant coach Adam Smith to the staff. A former standout track athlete for Carolina who was a volunteer coach during the 2010-11 season, Smith will work with the middle distance, high jump and multi events in addition to assisting with meet director duties. Smith will also be the assistant cross country coach under head coach Ryan Vanhoy.
"Adam is certainly no stranger to the UNC program as both an athlete and as a volunteer coach for the past year," assistant head coach Josh Langley said. "Being an All-ACC runner himself, he knows what it takes to be successful at this level. Adam was named a 3DL Award Winner by the Carolina Leadership Academy, so he has a proven ability to lead and develop relationships. He knows how we operate on a daily basis and will work primarily with our mid-distance runners, high jumpers and assist with the multi-event athletes in addition to retaining his duties as assistant meet director."
In his first year as a volunteer coach for Carolina, Smith helped coach NCAA qualifiers Dominique Jackson and Tasha Stanley in the 800. Under Smith's guide, Stanley ran a personal-best time of 2:05.42 as a junior and took second at the ACC Indoor Championships and third at the ACC Outdoor Championships.
Smith also assisted with high jumpers Patience Coleman and Ariel Roberts as Coleman earned the ACC Indoor title and Roberts took second while setting a school record in the pentathlon at the ACC indoor meet. Smith also helped All-America Mateo Sossah with his indoor and outdoor NCAA pursuits in the heptathlon and pentathlon in addition to high jumper Donte Nall, who also qualified for the NCAA Outdoor Championships.
Smith majored in history and minored in coaching education during his time at Carolina and graduated in December, 2010. While competing for the Tar Heels, Smith was a two-time All-ACC scorer as a member of the first-place ACC Indoor Championships distance medley relay, and the 800 meter runner up. Smith served as the men's team captain his junior and senior years and was a Carolina Leadership Academy 3DL Award Winner.
