Carolina softball head coach Donna Papa announced the addition of assistant coach Fale Aviu to her staff on August 11, 2022.
Aviu, a three-time national champion and 2019 National Fastpitch Coaches Association First Team All-American at Oklahoma, comes to UNC after spending the 2022 season as the Sooners' graduate assistant. She also served as a student manager for her alma mater during the shortened 2020 season.
"I am thrilled to welcome Fale Aviu to our Carolina softball staff and family," Papa said.
"Fale had an outstanding career at the University of Oklahoma, winning three national championships as a player and as part of their coaching staff. Fale has also been to the Women's College World Series five times and just finished competing with her pro team, the Florida Vibe. Her championship mentality and those types of experiences as a player and coach are invaluable. Fale will oversee our offense and will bring great relatability to all aspects of the game to our players."
A four-year starter and three-time NFCA All-Region selection, Aviu was ranked as the toughest to strikeout in Division 1 in each season of her career. She finished her Sooner career ranked sixth in OU career history in games played (255), fifth in sacrifice flies (9), sixth in HBP (36) and 10th in career doubles (45).
Professionally, Aviu has played for the USSSA Pride and this past summer played for the Florida Vibe in Bradenton, Fla.
"I am honored to be joining the coaching staff here at the University of North Carolina," Aviu said. "My goal is to help elevate this program to be a championship caliber contender. I am committed to mentoring our young student-athletes to be successful both on and off the field. I look forward to working alongside of Coach Papa, Coach Dobbins and staff during this journey."
