Shannon Murphy joined the University of North Carolina athletic training staff in August 2019 after working as an assistant athletic trainer at the University of Southern California with the women’s indoor and beach volleyball programs.
Her primary clinical responsibility at Carolina is the women’s lacrosse team.Â
Murphy is a graduate of Duquesne University, where she earned a B.S in Athletic Training in 2014. From 2010-12, Murphy was also a member of the varsity women’s lacrosse team. Murphy obtained her Ed.M. from Boston University in 2016, where she was a graduate assistant athletic trainer, working with a wide range of teams, including swimming & diving and field hockey.Â
Following graduate school, Murphy moved to California, where she completed the Advanced Post Graduate Athletic Training Program at Stanford University. While at Stanford, Murphy was introduced to a wide range of clinical advancements. She took a special interest in Dynamic Neuromuscular Stabilization in conjunction with functional rehabilitation. Clinical and research interests included concussion evaluation, diagnosis and rehabilitation. She also advocates for mental health services and development of mental health resources for student athletes.Â
She has been an NATABOC Certified Athletic Trainer since 2014.  She continues to hold research interests in concussion and ACL prevention and post-operative ACL return to play.
Murphy is a Baltimore native who currently resides in Durham, N.C. She was the head athletic trainer for the 2022 UNCÂ women's lacrosse national championship team.Â
