Katrina Dowd returned to Carolina in the summer of 2018 as associate head coach and will serve as UNC’s offensive coordinator and draw specialist coach. She also will assist Levy and longtime assistant coach and director of recruiting Phil Barnes in scouting, recruiting and all other aspects of guiding the Carolina program.
Dowd returned to Carolina after two years as the head coach at Oregon, where she compiled a record of 18-17 from 2017-18.
Prior to departing for Oregon, Dowd was an assistant coach at Carolina for four seasons from 2013-16, helping lead the Tar Heels to NCAA titles in 2013 and 2016. With Dowd at the helm of the offense, players like Katie Hoeg, Jamie Ortega, Molly Hendrick, Aly Messinger, Kara Cannizzaro, Sammy Jo Tracy and others broke UNC scoring and draw control records.
A native of Yorktown Heights, N.Y., Dowd was a two-time first-team IWLCA All-America at Northwestern (2009, 2010), winning three NCAA championships (2007, 2008, 2009). She was the 2010 IWLCA Attacker of the Year and a Tewaaraton Award finalist, finishing the season with 110 points on 77 goals and 33 assists. She led the ’09 Wildcats to their third consecutive national title, scoring a team-high 75 goals.
In her career, Dowd compiled 209 goals and 58 assists for 267 total points in 88 games. She finished her career fourth in Northwestern history in goals, and in the Top 10 in assists, ground balls, caused turnovers and draw controls.
She is one of the most decorated international players in the sport’s history, starring for the U.S. National Team from 2008-14. She scored a World Cup-record 26 goals in 2013 to lead the Americans to a gold medal. She earned All-World honors for her efforts and was named the Best Women’s Player honor for 2013 by Lacrosse Magazine.
Dowd has starred professionally in the United Women’s Lacrosse League, earning all-star honors while leading the Long Island Sound to a 2016 league championship.
Prior to coming to Carolina in 2013, Dowd coached at Syracuse during the 2012 season, helping lead the Orange to the NCAA championship game for the first time in program history. Before her stint at Syracuse, she coached at the University of Denver for the 2011 season.
