Jonathan Crist

With over 10 years of coaching experience, Jonathan Crist joins the North Carolina rowing staff as volunteer assistant coach for the spring 2021 semester.

Crist comes to Carolina with over a decade of experience at the club, collegiate and masters levels. Most recently, Crist served as the interim director of rowing and the head masters coach at Rogue Rowing in Ashland, Ore. In this role he also served as the assistant coach and director of the Southern Oregon University rowing club. Crist spent the previous three years as the head coach of development for Rogue Rowing where he guided the men's 2- and women's lightweight 2x to qualify for the 2019 Youth National Championships.

While in Oregon, Crist spent time with USRowing's women's Northwest Olympic Development Program and the men's Junior National Team High Performance & U17 Development Camp. In 2018, Crist coached the U17 8+ to the championship title at USRowing Club Nationals, while the 4+s took the top three spots.

Before his time in Oregon, Crist was on staff with the Three Rivers Rowing Association in Pittsburgh, Pa. where he served as the head novice coach and interim head juniors coach over a two-year period from Aug. 2015-June 2017.

Off the water, Crist also taught oral communication at the Community College of Allegheny County in Monroeville, Pa. for the 2016-17 academic year. He spent the previous four academic years at Duquesne, instructing interpersonal communication. While in graduate school, Crist served as a volunteer assistant coach at Duquesne for two seasons and Central Catholic High School in Pittsburgh, Pa. for two seasons.

With his Level II USRowing certification in progress, Crist earned his Ph.D. in rhetoric from Duquesne in 2020. He served as a lay brother at the Pittsburgh Oratory of St. Philip Neri from 2011-2015. Crist received his master's degree from Duquesne in 2010 and earned his bachelor's degree from Pittsburgh in 2006.
