In 2023, Kelly helped North Carolina secure its seventh individual National Champion, as Austin O'Connor was victorious at 157-pounds, the second individual title of his career. O'Connor's finish made him the first wrestler in program history to garner All-America honors five times, with Lachlan McNeil and Gavin Kane adding podium finishes for UNC's best team finish since 1995.
Kelly comes to UNC from Arizona State, where he was an assistant for two seasons. He has also coached at Stanford, NC State, Cal Poly and Harvard. At Arizona State, Kelly helped coach nine All-America wrestlers, including a national champion at the 2019 NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships (Zahid Valencia, 174lbs.).
Kelly served as the USA Cadet World Team Coach from 2013-15 and a coach for the USA Junior World Team in 2016.
He and his wife, Lisa, have two children: a daughter, Athin Holland and a newborn son, Aston Ren.
