Mattes joined the University of North Carolina football staff in January 2025 and currently serves as Chief of Staff.
Prior to arriving in Chapel Hill, Mattes spent eight seasons with the New England Patriots from 2017-24, serving in several player operations and development roles. He joined the organization in player operations and engagement before advancing to Director of Player Operations & Engagement and later Director of Football Development. In those roles, Mattes supported players throughout their NFL careers while assisting with the day-to-day operations of the football program.
Before entering the NFL, Mattes served as an assistant coach with the University of Maryland men’s lacrosse program, helping the Terrapins reach consecutive national championship games in 2016 and 2017 and capture the 2017 NCAA title. He previously coached at Westfield High School in New Jersey.
A native of Westfield, N.J., Mattes played lacrosse at Rutgers from 2007-11, earning USILA All-America and First-Team All-Big East honors as a faceoff specialist. He graduated from Rutgers with a degree in Sociology and Organizational Leadership. Mattes went on to play professionally in Major League Lacrosse for eight seasons, including as a member of the 2011 MLL champion Boston Cannons, and represented the German National Team at the 2014 World Lacrosse Championships. He also co-founded The Faceoff Academy in 2013.
