Dr. Kelly Waicus has been a team physician for the University of North Carolina since 2005.

She earned a B.S. degree at Duke University and then attended medical school at the University of North Carolina. She completed residency in pediatrics at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center in 1998. She then returned to Chapel Hill for a Primary Care Sports Medicine fellowship at UNC, which she completed in 2000.

Waicus is board certified in Pediatrics, with a Certificate of Added Qualification in Sports Medicine. She currently serves as the head team physician for volleyball, women’s fencing, women’s tennis, women’s golf, softball, women’s lacrosse and the cheerleaders. She also served as the team physician for the US Lacrosse Men’s National team from 2018-23 including during the 2023 Men’s Lacrosse World Cup, where the team won the gold medal.

Waicus and her husband, Dr. Tom O’Connell, have two daughters, Kelsey and Caroline.
