John Brunner, who currently serves as the Associate Athletic Director for Event Management, returned to the UNC Athletic Department in October of 2017 after spending nearly two years with the Town of Chapel Hill overseeing the Recreation Division of Chapel Hill Parks and Recreation.

Brunner served as Director of Athletic Event Management at UNC from 2006-16, and prior to that served as Assistant Director of Ticketing from 2003-06.

Brunner earned his master's degree through UNC’s sport administration graduate program in 2003, after interning in the athletic director’s office and working with the compliance unit while completing his thesis research in Female and Minority Recruitment and retention efforts of Sport Administration Undergraduate and Graduate Educational programs.

Prior to his full time role with UNC Athletics, he worked in ticketing and was Interim Director of Athletic Event Management at Cornell University and worked in Ticketing, Marketing, and Facility Management with Harvard University’s athletic department.

Brunner also serves as a sport administrator for the UNC men’s lacrosse program and is an assistant teaching professor in the Department of Exercise & Sport Science at UNC.

Brunner is a graduate of Ithaca College’s sport management program. He is married to Michelle (formerly Greco) and has three daughters – Gianna, Isabela and Savannah.
