Mike Schall was named the head coach of the Carolina volleyball team on February 15, 2023.
Schall completed his seventh season with the team in 2024 and second as head coach. In 2024, Schall guided the Tar Heels to a stellar 23-8 record, goin 14-6 in ACC play to secure the teams first NCAA Tournament appearance since 2021. The season included sweeping Duke twice, an upset win over No. 19 Florida State and a win in the first round of the NCAA Tournament over Yale.
He was instrumental in Jackie Taylor picking up ACC All-Freshman Team honors and Mabrey Shaffmaster earning All-ACC honors for the fourth time in her career as well as AVCA All-Region honors.
During his first season at the helm, Schall guided junior outside hitter Mabrey Shaffmaster to her third career All-ACC and all-region recognitions, while freshman Sydney Nolan earned All-ACC freshman team honors.
Carolina tallied sweep victories over West Virginia, Loyala (Md.), Coastal Carolina, Virginia, Syracuse, Boston College and Virginia Tech, posting a 7-6 record in Carmichael Arena. The Tar Heels also earned come-from-behind victories against Duke and Wake Forest. The Tar Heels finished the season 13-14, going 7-11 in ACC play.
Prior to joining the Carolina staff in February 2018 as an assistant coach, Schall came to Chapel Hill after spending seven years at Triangle Volleyball Club as an associate director. During his time at Triangle his leadership, coaching experience and passionate approach to teaching the game were instrumental in advancing the mission of the club and achieving national recognition as one of the top clubs in the country.
Schall began his coaching career as a member of Russ Rose’s staff at Penn State serving as assistant coach for the Nittany Lions. While at Penn State, Schall was involved in every area of the program including recruiting, practice planning and implementation, scouting and match preparation, and individual player development. He coached numerous Big Ten all-conference players, conference players of the year, national players of the year, and USA National Team members, including Christa Harmotto and Nicole Fawcett. During Schall’s tenure, Penn State advanced to the NCAA Final Four five times, winning the national title in 1999.
Beyond coaching responsibilities at Triangle Volleyball, Schall maintained a consistent approach to teaching in the club, creating and supporting an atmosphere conducive to success in the gym, leading and developing Triangle's 90+ member coaching staff, and providing recruiting assistance for Triangle student-athletes who are among the most highly recruited in North Carolina. Schall's reputation and experience led to his selection to participate in the prestigious The Art of Coaching Volleyball coaching cadre at the UNC Chapel Hill clinic in April 2017.
Schall graduated from Penn State in 1994 with a bachelor's degree in exercise and sports science. As a four-year member and two-time co-captain of the Penn State men’s volleyball team, Schall helped Penn State achieve three EIVA titles and three national semifinal appearances.
Schall and his wife Sarah live in Apex with their four children: Annabelle, Sam, Andrew and Mia. Daughter, Annabelle, was a setter on the UNC Wilmington volleyball team from 2021-23.
