Doug Wojcik is in his second year as an assistant coach at the University of North Carolina. Last year at Carolina, the Tar Heels won 26 games, earned a No. 1 national ranking late in the regular season, posted a 13-3 league record and won a share of the ACC regular-season championship, advanced to the ACC Tournament finals, and were the No. 2 seed in the NCAA Tournament South Regional.
Wojcik also directs the junior varsity program at Carolina. In 2001, he was named a “head-coach-in-waiting” by Athlon Sports. The Wheeling, W. Va., native was an assistant coach under Matt Doherty at the University of Notre Dame in 1999-2000 and came to Carolina with Doherty on July 11, 2000. Prior to joining Doherty at Notre Dame, Wojcik (pronounced WO-jick) had been an assistant for nine years at the United States Naval Academy.
Notre Dame went 22-15 and earned a berth in the NIT championship game.
A former team captain at Navy, Wojcik coordinated recruiting for Navy in addition to working with the Midshipmen perimeter and post players. Hassan Booker was among the players Wojcik coached at the Academy. Booker a two-time all-conference selection, won the 1998 Chip Hilton Award presented by the Basketball Hall of Fame to the player who demonstrates personal character both on and off the court
A 1987 graduate of the Naval Academy, Wojcik captained the Middies as a senior in 1986-87. He led Navy to the NCAA Tournament in three straight seasons, including a 1986 East Regional Final appearance against eventual national runnerup Duke. He then served as an assistant coach on Navy teams that played in the NCAA Tournament in 1994, 1997 and 1998. The 1998 team lost to the Tar Heels in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament in Hartford, Conn. He has played a part in every conference title won by Navy and in six of the 11 NCAA bids received in Academy history.
Wojcik still holds Navy records for most assists in a game (14), season (251) and career (714), setting the single-season mark as a junior. He started every game at point guard for three seasons, helping Navy to a 26-6 record as a sophomore followed by marks of 30-5 and 26-6 his final two seasons. Teammate David Robinson turned over his 1986 Colonial Athletic Association MVP award to Wojcik, citing his unselfish play and leadership qualities. After graduating from Navy, he attended Surface Warfare Officer School in Newport, R.I. He was then assigned to the USS W.S. Sims out of Jacksonville, Fla. where he served as First Lieutenant and Engineering Officer for two years.
His high school coach is Wake Forest head coach Skip Prosser.
Born April 12, 1964, Wojcik is married to the former Lael House, a 1990 Naval Academy graduate who earned letters in basketball and track. Their son, Paxson Walter, was born on August 8, 2000.
