Whitnee Johnson joined the UNC gymnastics program as a volunteer assistant coach in 2015. She primarily worked with the team on the vault and floor exercise. For the 2017 season, Johnson has been promoted to an assistnat coach for the gymnastics team.
Johnson came to Chapel Hill from Kent State, where she competed from 2012-2015. During her time with the Golden Flashes, she accumulated an impressive list of accolades, both in the gym and in the classroom.
Johnson was an integral part of Kent State’s regular season championships in the Mid-American Conference in 2013 and 2014. As a senior, Johnson served as a captain for the Golden Flashes, leading the team to a first place finish in the conference championship meet.
In May of 2015, Johnson graduated summa cum laude with a degree in exercise science. She earned academic All-MAC and scholastic All-America honors throughout her four years at Kent State. Additionally, Johnson received the Presidential Award in 2015 for sustaining a 4.0 GPA during her senior year.
Throughout her career with the Golden Flashes, Johnson notched career high scores of 9.875 on vault, 9.825 on the uneven bars, 9.875 on the balance beam, 9.85 in the floor exercise and 39.15 in the all-around competition.
