Former Durham Bulls catcher Alex Marconi is in his first season as an assistant coach with the University of North Carolina baseball program. Marconi works with Carolina's catchers and hitters and also performs various administrative duties.
Prior to joining the Tar Heel staff, Marconi played four years of professional baseball, most recently with the St. Paul Saints of the Northern League. Drafted out of Kent State University in the 27th round by the Tampa Bay Devils Rays organization, Marconi spent three seasons with club and made stops with the Durham Bulls in 2001 and `02. He also saw action with the Devil Rays' Orlando, Bakersfield, Hudson Valley and Princeton teams. Marconi spent the 2003 season with the Elmira Pioneers of the Northeast League.
Marconi also spent time working as a catching and hitting instructor at Cary's Hall of Fame Baseball Academy in 2003-04 and worked various camps and clinics throughout his time in the minor leagues. Marconi also worked summer and winter camps at Kent State from 1997-2004.
Marconi played for the Golden Flashes from 1997-2000 and was a first-team All-MAC catcher in 1999 and 2000. He also earned all-region honors those same seasons and was a preseason All-America in 2000. He was KSU's team captain as a senior and was an Academic All-MAC choice in 1999. He graduated from Kent State with a Bachelor's degree in general studies.
Marconi was married to the former Amanda Lescher in October 2003.
