- Undergraduate Assistant Coach
A two-year letterwinner at Carolina and member of the 2006 College World Series team, Matt Spencer is in his first season as an undergraduate assistant. Spencer transferred to Arizona State for the 2007 season before being selected in the third round of the 2007 MLB Draft by the Philadelphia Phillies.
Spencer hit .278 with six home runs and 29 RBIs as a sophomore in 2006, when the Tar Heels advanced to their first College World Series since 1989. A native of Morristown, Tennessee, Spencer had a pair of hits against Oregon State in the 2006 CWS Finals before hitting .369 with nine homers and 52 RBIs for the 2007 Arizona State team that advanced to the College World Series.
Spencer spent six seasons playing professionally, with stops in the Philadelphia, Oakland and Chicago (NL) organizations in addition to a year in the independent Atlantic League. He advanced as high as the AAA Iowa Cubs in 2011.
