Robbi Pickeral Evans joined UNC’s Department of Athletics in February, 2017, and serves as Senior Associate Athletic Director for External Affairs and Strategic Communications. She also serves as sport administrator for women’s basketball and baseball.
Among her duties, she leads the department’s External Communications units – Athletic Communications, Creative Services and Go Heels Productions– as well as the Department’s relationship with the ACC Network. She directs communications strategies for the department, including executive, internal and crisis communications, and serves as spokesperson for the department. She collaborates closely with marketing and revenue generation efforts, Tar Heel Sports Properties/Learfield, The Rams Club and the university. She also is heavily involved in issues management and strategic planning.
In addition, she leads special projects for the department, which have included oversight of the annual Carolina Sport and Entertainment Summit, which launched in 2018; various facilities upgrades; the yearly blue-carpet RAMMY Awards; the year-long campaign and celebration of 50 Years of Carolina Women’s Athletics in 2022; and the launch of the CAROLINA NIL platform in 2024.
From 2018-25, Pickeral Evans also oversaw the Department’s marketing team and relationship with multimedia rights partner Tar Heel Sports Properties/Learfield as well as concessions and merchandize contracts. She spent her first 18 months in Carolina Athletics as Associate AD for Strategic Communications/Special Assistant to the AD, leading department initiatives, strategic projects and communications strategy.
A life-long lover of words and storytelling, Pickeral Evans graduated from Carolina in 1997 with degrees in journalism and mass communication and history, and she went on to become an award-winning sports reporter while working at the St. Petersburg (Fla.) Times, St. Paul (Minn.) Pioneer Press, The (Raleigh) News & Observer and ESPN.com. She joined Carolina’s Office of University of Communications in 2013 and helped build and lead a talented content team while working on strategic messaging and creative projects.
Her husband Michael is a teacher, and they have a golden retriever, Georgi.
