CHAPEL HILL --- Zack Gahagan clubbed a pair of two-run home runs as Blue beat Navy 5-3 in the opening game of the 2017 Carolina Baseball Fall World Series Friday night at Boshamer Stadium. Cooper Criswell went six solid innings to get the win on the mound, with Caden O'Brien and Kyle Blendinger combining for three shutout innings of relief.
Gahagan opened the scoring with a two-run blast to left in the first. Jackson Hesterlee and Brandon Martorano had RBIs in the third to put Navy up 3-2, but Gahagan struck again in the bottom of the frame to put Blue back on top for good.
Angel Zarate and Jake Holtzapple had two hits each to lead the Navy offense, which out-hit Blue 9-6 on the evening. Ashton McGee had a pair of hits to go with Gahagan's three-hit night for Blue.
Game two of the three-game series starts Saturday at noon.
