Tar Heels Open Fall With Pride Race

Scrimmage against Duke provides experience.
BAHAMA, N.C. – The North Carolina rowing team saw its first outside competition of the 2017-18 season on Saturday, racing in a morning scrimmage against Duke on Lake Michie.
UNC fielded five eights – including one made up of freshmen – and Duke raced four, providing plenty of opportunities to gain fall racing experience.
"I was pleased with how we started our season today," UNC coach Sarah Haney said. "Our goals were to post our fastest times, keep the technique that we have been working on and maintain our length during our race. Also, with it being our first race, I wanted the team to stay calm and not let an opponent fluster us and take us out of our rhythm. I feel like we did a great job with those goals. Duke is a fast team who is on the move. We are progressing as a program as well and I was happy to see that we are keeping pace with them."
The event was billed as a Pride Race, with the goal of showing support and acceptance for all. "We were proud to participate in an event that shows acceptance of all," Haney said. "Our team takes pride in valuing all opinions."
Next up for the Tar Heels is the Head of the Charles Regatta in Cambridge, Mass., on Oct. 21. UNC will field an eight in the prestigious event.
