UNC Caps Spring Training With Successful Scrimmage

LAKE LURE, N.C. – The North Carolina rowing team wrapped up a successful spring training week with a scrimmage against George Mason Friday morning, racing a 2,000-meter course on Lake Lure. The Tar Heels put four eights and two fours on the water, giving 46 student-athletes an opportunity to compete.
"It was another good showing for Carolina Rowing," UNC coach Sarah Haney said. "We have been working on executing our plan and we did a nice job of competing for the complete 2,000 meters. We had a good week of training and we enjoyed the opportunity to wrap it up with a good race day."
UNC first and second varsity eights faced off against George Mason's varsity eight, while the UNC third and fourth eights faced GMU's 2V8. Both programs fielded first and second varsity fours and all raced in one field. The conditions were windy, with a 5-10 mph headwind and gusts of 15-20 mph.
The Tar Heel boats have gotten lots of racing experience in just under a week. On Saturday, UNC raced Duke and host Clemson at the Carolina Cup in Clemson, S.C. With multiple teams training at Lake Lure, Carolina was able to scrimmage West Virginia on Thursday and then turn around and race George Mason Friday.
"We had goals about how and when to compete within our race plan," Haney said. "We have been working on those goals coming off the Carolina Cup and wanted to put that into play in our scrimmage with West Virginia yesterday. It was our goal to put that into practice over 2000 meters today."
The team will wrap up its training trip and return to Chapel Hill on Saturday. UNC's next competition is on March 24 in Philadelphia against Temple and Saint Joseph's.
